Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, is lining up a very large pool of money for its artificial intelligence push. According to VietnamPlus, Meta on 26 October launched a share offering worth about 35 billion USD and announced plans to sell up to 60 billion USD more through a separate programme, starting no earlier than the first quarter of 2027. If both are carried out in full, they could bring in a combined 95 billion USD.
The money is meant to expand data centres, computing capacity and AI products as Meta competes with OpenAI and Anthropic. Chipmakers Nvidia, AMD and Broadcom have expressed interest in buying up to 5 billion USD of Meta shares between them, VietnamPlus said, though none has made a formal commitment.
Why Meta needs the cash
Meta's latest results show the strain. Its third-quarter report, released on 21 October, showed revenue up 26% year on year at 64.6 billion USD. But capital expenditure in the quarter, including principal payments on finance leases, reached 34.91 billion USD, more than half of revenue, and free cash flow was negative 2.12 billion USD. In other words, the business did not generate enough cash in the quarter to cover its infrastructure spending.
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Q3 revenue | 64.6 billion USD (up 26% year on year) |
| Q3 capital expenditure (incl. finance lease principal) | 34.91 billion USD |
| Q3 free cash flow | Negative 2.12 billion USD |
| Full-year capex forecast | 135–145 billion USD |
| Future spending commitments | About 825 billion USD |
| Potential proceeds from the two share programmes | Up to 95 billion USD |

Meta's third-quarter filing lists future spending commitments of about 825 billion USD, mostly for data centres, AI infrastructure and cloud computing, and the company expects full-year capital spending of 135–145 billion USD. Set against those commitments, 95 billion USD from share sales covers only about 11.5%. VietnamPlus said the figures show the scale of resources Meta is pouring into the AI race and the need to balance infrastructure growth against cash flow.

What's next
After the roughly 35 billion USD offering launched on 26 October, the next step is the programme to sell up to 60 billion USD of shares, from the first quarter of 2027 at the earliest. One thing to watch is whether Nvidia, AMD and Broadcom turn their interest in up to 5 billion USD of shares into firm commitments. In its outlook, Meta said it will keep investing heavily to support both its core business and new AI initiatives.
