Chinese television drama releases fell to ninety in the third quarter of 2026, down 44 per cent year on year, according to figures relayed by Tuoi Tre from Sohu on October 17. Episode volume declined 46 per cent to 2,325.

These are cited industry release figures, not an independent audit of all production activity or a direct measure of revenue.

Fewer platform releases

The four major long-form platforms, iQIYI, Youku, Tencent Video and Mango TV, released 63 dramas, down 49 per cent. Newly produced titles excluding inventory programmes numbered 53, down 21 per cent.

The source interprets that difference as tighter release management affecting both new productions and stored content. A smaller slate has not automatically spread audience interest more evenly.

Among twenty leading titles ranked by average effective views per episode, only four exceeded twenty million during their peak broadcast periods.

Attention remains concentrated

Some other dramas passed fifteen million effective views per episode, but the report questions whether those results exceed expectations once production and marketing costs are considered. Effective views are not interchangeable with every platform play.

The analysis identifies a weak middle tier of programmes capable of sustaining audiences, with attention concentrated among a few leading titles.

Three costume dramas launched between October 11 and 16 have generated fresh competition and discussion. That is an early signal rather than evidence of an industry-wide recovery.

Future performance depends on the appeal of upcoming releases and consistently measured audience results, beyond the reduction in programme supply alone.
