The first Nippon Anime Awards ceremony is scheduled for November 21, 2027, at Tokyo's SGC Hall Ariake. Variety reports that the Association of Japanese Animations, or AJA, unveiled the name on November 2 at the closing event for Tokyo Anime Next.

An industry initiative taking shape

AJA president Ishikawa Kazuko introduced the awards at Tokyo Tatemono Brillia Hall. The programme will recognise anime works and their creators while addressing audiences in Japan and abroad. Related initiatives with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government are intended to develop young talent and business opportunities for animation.

The announcement establishes the name, venue and first ceremony date. It does not provide nominations or judging results. A symposium at the TIFFCOM market on October 30 had already examined the purpose of the new prize.

The launch programme's wider context

Tokyo Anime Next ran from October 30 to November 2, mainly in Ikebukuro. Fourteen titles screened at three cinemas, with selected cast-and-crew discussions and a premiere of the first episode of Lona. Production classes and children's animation activities added a training dimension.

The closing concert paired the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra with footage from Demon Slayer, Attack on Titan and Detective Conan. Nakagawa Nami, Higuchi Ai and Kuraki Mai performed music associated with the series.

Those completed activities form the background to the new awards. The next details to watch are eligibility, categories and selection procedures for the 2027 ceremony, beyond the date and location now announced.
