The character Lan remains part of Mai no loi tam biet as the film prepares for its cinema release, but her appearance has been reworked using AI and CGI. Producer Daniel K. Winn explained the decision at the September 8 premiere in Ho Chi Minh City, according to VnExpress.
Lan, the mother of the central character Daniel, was originally played by Truong Ngoc Anh. Rather than remove the role, the production brought in another actress of Vietnamese heritage to reshoot scenes, then used technology to create the revised appearance and process the dialogue. The producer said Lan was essential to several turning points in Daniel's life.
The additional work took six months and increased costs by about 10% over the original planned budget. VnExpress's preview screening report put the character's screen time at roughly ten minutes across three sequences.
Previously titled Chiec ken, the film follows Daniel from childhood with his grandmother into the upheavals of adult life. Kieu Chinh plays the grandmother, Uy Nhan portrays the young Daniel, and Samuel An plays his father.
The film is scheduled to open in Vietnam on September 11 with a K classification. The technological reconstruction of a key role has become a notable part of the work required to complete its release version.
