A European market gateway
Belgium is Vietnam's sixth-largest EU trading partner, and Vietnam is Belgium's largest partner in ASEAN. Bilateral trade approached USD 4.37 billion in 2025. Vietnamese sales include footwear, steel, textiles, machinery, coffee and seafood.
During King Philippe and Queen Mathilde's April 2025 visit to Vietnam, trade-promotion agencies exchanged a cooperation memorandum. It covers information, exhibitions, training and support for women-owned businesses. That framework dates from last year rather than representing a newly signed agreement in the current report.
Green technology and logistics opportunities
Belgian ambassador Pieter Leenknegt identified renewable energy, electricity storage, robotics, smart farming, aquaculture and waste treatment as promising areas. He highlighted possible combinations of Belgium's offshore-wind experience with Vietnam's development potential, alongside links between Antwerp and Zeebrugge ports and Hải Phòng and the Mekong Delta.
Vietnam's trade-promotion agency plans a mission to Belgium and the Netherlands on November 14–22, 2026. It will seek partners in semiconductors, electronics, precision engineering, automation and supporting industries. The EVFTA provides an existing trade framework, while expectations around the EVIPA concern investment protection. The identified opportunities and planned mission do not establish newly approved projects or completed commercial agreements.
