The VN-Index lost about 16 points on Monday, 19 October, reversing a strong morning advance. It closed below 1,690, its lowest area since late July, according to VnExpress's end-of-session report.

Large-cap selling turns the market

The index briefly exceeded 1,720 during the morning. Gains lasted into early afternoon before selling intensified in major stocks, pushing the benchmark below 1,700.

VIC fell nearly 4% and removed more than 13 points from the index. VCB, BID, HPG and VHM also closed below reference prices. By the close, the benchmark was more than 12% below the 1,927 peak established around midyear.

Banks faced broad pressure. TCB, LPB and KLB gained, but several larger peers declined, including VPB by 2% and ACB by 1.7%. Oil and gas shares moved the other way, with PVT, BSR and GAS rising approximately 1%–2% and limiting the overall fall.

Liquidity remains a concern

Trading value on the Ho Chi Minh City exchange exceeded VND13 trillion, slightly above the previous session. No stock recorded VND1 trillion in matched trades. Foreign investors bought around VND1.4 trillion and sold nearly VND2.2 trillion, extending net selling to 19 consecutive sessions.

MBS analysts said quarterly earnings effects could remain selective while liquidity is weak. TPS identified possible long-term support near 1,685, but said a sustained recovery would depend on stronger participation and absorption of selling pressure.

Those are analyst assessments rather than subsequent market outcomes. The index levels, trading figures and foreign flows describe the 19 October close and should not be read as live prices.
