Vietnam's benchmark VN-Index rose 21.96 points to 1,760.63 on 22 October, its second straight gain, VietnamPlus reported. Vingroup-linked stocks did most of the lifting, helped by foreign investors, who were net buyers of about 340 billion dong, according to VnExpress. On the same day, the selling price of US dollars at major banks fell to just above 26,000 dong, the lowest since mid-April 2025.

A narrow rally

VnExpress said the index stayed green all session. It hovered around 1,750 points before 10am, then buying pushed it to about 1,760. Yet the gains were thin: at one point decliners outnumbered advancers two to one, and both VnExpress and VietnamPlus reported more losers than gainers on HoSE at the close, though their exact counts differ.

Large caps carried the index. VnDirect estimated, as cited by VnExpress, that VIC and VHM added nearly 19 points between them. Vingroup's VIC closed at 232,900 dong, up 4.2%, and Vinhomes' VHM rose 3.6% to 64,000 dong. The two were also the most traded stocks, at more than 600 billion and 884 billion dong.

VietnamPlus reported gains for VPL (2.4%) and VRE (1.4%), and an afternoon rally in oil and gas: PVD up 5%, BSR 3.91%, PLX 1.99% and GAS 1.43%. Banks were mostly weaker, with SSB down 1.23% and LPB down 1.78%, while VCB, TCB, MBB and BID slipped less than 1%. STB (+1.58%) and HDB (+1.13%) bucked the trend. Brokerages were split too, with ORS up 6.48% while SSI, VCI, VND and HCM lost around 1%.

Turnover did not follow prices. HoSE trading value was nearly 15,300 billion dong, down almost 25% from the previous session, VnExpress said.

As KBVN+ reported in VN-Index jumps almost 47 points on 21 October, the index then rose 46.7 points (2.76%) to 1,738.7, its biggest gain since early April, as foreign investors returned to net buying after 20 straight sessions of net selling. Bank dollar price at its lowest in a year and a half

Vietcombank quoted the dollar at about 25,650 dong to buy and 26,030 dong to sell on the morning of 22 October, 20 dong lower than the day before, VnExpress reported. VietinBank quoted 25,647 and 26,026 dong. The bank selling price is down nearly 2% from a peak above 26,500 dong three months ago. The State Bank of Vietnam's central rate stood at 25,632 dong, allowing commercial banks to trade within a 5% band of 24,350 to 26,913 dong. Exchange counters in Ho Chi Minh City traded at around 26,000 to 26,100 dong.

For households, VnExpress noted that people buying dollars for travel, overseas study or dollar debt pay less, while those holding dollars or expecting remittances get fewer dong when they convert.

What comes next

In comments made after the 21 October session and cited by VnExpress, Vietcombank Securities (VCBS) said technical indicators were regaining upward momentum but warned of volatility around the 1,740 to 1,750 resistance zone, which the index closed above on 22 October. VCBS advised investors to consider partial profit-taking on stocks that have already recovered.

On the currency, VietinBank's foreign exchange centre sees a stable short-term outlook. Techcombank analysts expect the rate to hover around 26,000 dong in the final months of the year, supported by a dong-dollar interest rate gap expected to stay above 3 percentage points, FDI inflows and year-end remittances.
