Watson Nguyễn heads into Pennsylvania’s 2026–27 university swimming season after winning the US national title in the 50-metre breaststroke. Tuổi Trẻ, citing The Daily Pennsylvanian, reports that the men’s team is scheduled to begin against Cornell and Harvard on 7 November.
A summer of personal milestones
At Irvine, California, on 30 July, Watson won the 50m breaststroke in 26.65 seconds, finishing ahead of Olympic men’s medley relay gold medallist Michael Andrew. The Daily Pennsylvanian’s account, as cited by Tuổi Trẻ, says Watson had been 11th nationally in the event a year earlier.
He also took bronze in the 100m breaststroke in 59.79 seconds, his first swim under one minute at that distance. In September he was named to the US national team roster for the 2026–27 season. The report says he is one of two Ivy League swimmers on that roster.
The national-team selection is a separate achievement from qualifying for an Olympic Games; no Olympic berth follows automatically from the roster announcement.
Roots and the college season
Citing Swimming World, Tuổi Trẻ says Watson was born in Plano, Texas, to Vietnamese parents and holds Vietnamese and US citizenship. Representing the United States at the 2023 world junior championships, he won medley relay gold and individual bronze medals in both breaststroke distances.
The report describes work on his start and transition from underwater movement to surface swimming. The Daily Pennsylvanian identified him as a notable returning swimmer for a Penn men’s team that finished last at the previous Ivy League championships. The meeting with Cornell and Harvard remains a scheduled contest, with its outcome to be established on the day.
