Nguyen Thuy Hien finished fifth in the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic women's 100m freestyle final in 56.68 seconds, SGGP reported. The race took place late on November 2 in Vietnam time after she qualified among eight finalists.
Improvement between two swims
Thuy Hien recorded 57.17 seconds in the heats. The Vietnam Sports Administration said she was second in her heat and fifth overall, securing a final place.
Starting from lane two, she was fourth after the opening 50 metres, according to SGGP, before losing speed in the second half and finishing fifth.
The final time was faster than her heat, but the sources do not establish it as a personal best. The figures show improvement between two swims in this event.
Medal places and remaining programme
Croatia's Ana Bobanovic won in 55.89 seconds and New Zealand's Alyssa Lawson took silver in 56.13. The administration's report gives India's Dhinidhi Desinghu bronze in 56.27.
Born in 2009, Thuy Hien is making her Youth Olympic debut. The administration recalled her 2022 National Games 50m freestyle gold and 2023 SEA Games 100m freestyle bronze as development background.
SGGP lists planned appearances in the 50m freestyle, 50m breaststroke and 100m breaststroke. Her next task is preparing for those events while reviewing how to maintain speed in the second half. Fifth place confirms a final appearance, rather than a medal or the outcome of the races still ahead.
