A McKinsey report released on September 29 estimates that around 11 million Americans, or 6.5% of the current workforce, could need to change occupations by 2035 because of automation and AI. This is a scenario-based projection, not a count of jobs already lost.
Its baseline scenario envisages automation reducing labour demand by the equivalent of 36 million jobs, while AI-related sectors and wider economic growth could generate demand for 40 million. The report emphasises occupational transitions and retraining; the 11 million figure is not projected net unemployment.
