Alstom has received an initial order worth approximately €800 million from Vingroup for Metropolis trains serving Hanoi metro projects. The French railway group disclosed the order in an investor report on 19 October, according to VnExpress.

First tranche, not the whole contract

Alstom said it would book the order in the third quarter of its 2026–27 financial year. It did not disclose how many trainsets this first tranche covers or the total value of the wider agreement.

The €800 million figure therefore should not be treated as the price of all 200 trains. Receiving an order also differs from completing production, delivery or passenger service.

Under the 6 October agreement, Alstom will manufacture the first 83 trainsets at Valenciennes in France. It will transfer technology and provide key components for Vingroup to assemble the remaining 117 in Vietnam. That split describes the entire programme, rather than the unspecified quantity in the initial order.

Five-car trains for five lines

The new-generation Metropolis trains will have five cars, aluminium bodies and GoA4 driverless operation. The body design is intended to reduce axle loads, energy use and track wear.

Vingroup participates through Vinhomes as a general contractor. The five projects, covering lines 1, 2, 8, 10 and 14, total 303.5km. Hanoi's urban railway management body and the Vinhomes–SGC consortium signed a turnkey contract on 15 October.

Construction began in June, with completion planned for 2030. Those dates describe a construction schedule, not operating lines.

Alstom has worked in Vietnam for more than 30 years, including supplying signalling and 10 trains for the Nhổn–Hanoi Station metro line.
