Vietnam’s weightlifting team returned on November 3 from the 2026 World Championships without a medal, SGGP reported. Four of its five lifters recorded totals. Coaches will use the results to assess performance and revise preparation for the 2028 Olympic qualification campaign.

Results behind the assessment

Trần Minh Trí finished fifth in the men’s 65 kg category with 316 kg, while Nguyễn Thành Duy placed 10th in the same category with 296 kg. K’Dương was fourth at men’s 60 kg with 281 kg. Vietnam’s women’s 53 kg entrant finished 18th with a 190 kg total.

Quàng Thị Tâm did not complete a total in the women’s 61 kg event. The five-athlete entry should therefore be distinguished from the four recorded totals. None of those results amounts to confirmation of an Olympic berth.

SGGP reported 35 entrants in the men’s 65 kg category. A coaching representative described the championships as a basis for individual technical review and training adjustments.

Qualification remains a longer process

Under the IWF framework described by SGGP, the 2028 Olympics has 12 categories, split equally between men and women, with 10 lifters per category and 120 places overall. A country may enter one athlete per category. The reported qualification period runs from July 27, 2026, to May 7, 2028.

Vietnam is targeting at least one place, concentrating on men’s 65 kg and women’s 53 kg and 61 kg. The immediate assignment is the 10th National Sports Games, followed by further international opportunities to improve qualification standing.
