Điện Biên has held a ceremony recognising Cống dance as national intangible cultural heritage. The listing itself was established by the culture minister's Decision 430/QĐ-BVHTTDL on March 5, 2026. The ceremony reported on October 20 celebrated that earlier decision and focused on preservation responsibilities.

Community practice sustains the heritage

In Điện Biên, Cống dance is practised in Nậm Kè, Mường Chà and Thanh Yên. It carries community memories, customs and spiritual life, maintained through the work of artisans, elders and successive generations. Recognition acknowledges both the art form and the community that transmits it.

Provincial culture official Nguyễn Thị Thanh Chuyên called for locally suitable preservation plans, continued folk-culture clubs, inventories and documentation. She stressed conditions that enable artisans to teach younger people, linking recognition to continuing practice.

Transmission beyond the ceremony

Nậm Kè chairman Nguyễn Tiến Thành said the heritage could endure only when residents value and practise it. The commune plans to work with specialist agencies and other Cống communities on collecting records, documentation and teaching, with participation from families and schools.

Possible links with heritage education and community tourism will be considered according to local conditions, customs and residents' interests. They represent future preservation work rather than an already operating tourism product.

Điện Biên has 24 nationally listed intangible heritage elements and 41 artisans awarded or posthumously awarded the title of Meritorious Artisan, including four Cống artisans. Cống dance's recognition is national; the report's separate UNESCO examples are Thái Xòe dance and Then practices.
