Dwight Yorke wants his coaching experience to carry more weight than his reputation as a former Manchester United striker. In a Guardian interview, he expressed interest in Ghana's vacancy following Carlos Queiroz's departure.
Yorke said an agent had told him of Ghanaian interest. The Ghana Football Association has not confirmed an approach, and no appointment was announced.
A managerial record beyond playing honours
Yorke led the A-League All Stars against Barcelona in May 2022 before taking charge of Macarthur. He won the Australia Cup within three months, delivering the club's first trophy.
Macarthur dismissed him in January 2023. A FIFA chamber and subsequently the Court of Arbitration for Sport found the dismissal lacked just cause, with an award of 212,500 Australian dollars reported. Yorke said the experience reinforced lessons about communication and transparency.
He took charge of Trinidad and Tobago in November 2024. The team missed World Cup qualification behind Curaçao and Jamaica. Yorke points to increased support and recruitment as other gains, while the federation's leadership had described qualification as his mandate.
Ghana interest remains unconfirmed
Ghana are bottom of their Africa Cup of Nations qualifying group after two defeats. The federation has announced that women's coach Kim Björkegren will temporarily lead the men against Somalia next month.
Yorke advocates organisation, a shared culture and clear communication. He also sees value in recruiting eligible diaspora players. Those views outline how he would approach a future job; they do not establish that Ghana have selected him.
