Indonesia is adjusting mandatory Halal certification deadlines for specified product groups, according to Vietnam's Ministry of Industry and Trade, citing an Indonesian government announcement on 16 October. Several requirements previously expected to start on 18 October 2026 are moving to October 2028.
Product categories have different timelines
The changes described for Article 160 of Government Regulation 42/2024 set 18 October 2028 for relevant food, beverage and slaughter-product requirements, excluding slaughter services in that provision. The transition for micro and small businesses covering food, beverages, slaughter products and slaughter services extends through 17 October 2028.
For foreign-origin food, beverages, slaughter products and slaughter services, the stated start is 18 October 2028, taking account of completion of mutual-recognition cooperation on Halal certification.
Some Article 161 categories also receive transition periods through 17 October 2028, including cosmetics, chemical products, genetically modified products and certain consumer goods. Medicines have multiple schedules: the account also identifies 2029 and 2034 deadlines for other medicine groups. It should not be read as one new deadline for all merchandise.
More preparation, continued certification policy
Indonesia says the changes are intended to strengthen its Halal ecosystem, improve readiness and avoid trade disruption. They are to be reflected in amendments to Regulation 42/2024 and related implementing rules.
The government maintains its commitment to Halal product assurance. Adjusting implementation dates does not abolish the certification system.
Indonesia's chamber of commerce supports additional preparation time, particularly for smaller firms, while calling for clearer technical communication. Businesses' preparation remains linked to the rules for their particular products and activities.
