Resident Evil led mainland China’s box office for a fourth consecutive weekend, while John Wick opened third, 12 years after its 2014 global release. Variety, citing Artisan Gateway, reported total market revenue of $18.2 million for October 30–November 1.
Returning leader and delayed debut
Resident Evil earned RMB 28.5 million, reported as $4.3 million, during the three days. The reboot has accumulated $71.3 million since its October 5 launch. Those figures distinguish the latest weekend from its full local run.
Traces of Justice remained second with $3.9 million in its fifth weekend, bringing its cumulative total to $98.5 million. Chen Sicheng’s investigation drama has been in release since October 1.
John Wick took $2.3 million in its opening mainland weekend. This was a local release of the original film rather than a new instalment. Variety noted that Chapter 4 and Ballerina reached Chinese cinemas in 2025, while Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 had yet to do so.
The broader market
Mr. & Mrs. Pardon ranked fourth with $2 million, lifting its total to $59 million. Once Upon a Time in the Middle East added $900,000 in its twelfth weekend for a cumulative $356.9 million.
Mainland China’s 2026 year to date box office reached $4.73 billion, down 29% from the comparable 2025 period. The next reporting weekend will show whether John Wick sustains attendance beyond its debut and whether Resident Evil keeps its lead. Different local release dates remain essential context for comparing films within the same franchise.
