U50 Upes1 will take an all-student squad from Từ Sơn University of Physical Education and Sports into the northern qualifying stage of Vietnam’s 2026 national seven-a-side cup. Founder Phạm Cao Sơn sees the VSC-S6 campaign as a chance for the students to share an experience outside their university programme.

He told SGGP Sports that he hopes the team can help establish a tradition for later generations at the Bắc Ninh university. Learning and developing together are central to his ambitions, alongside a desire for positive results.

Building a student team

Sơn said every player in U50 Upes1 is a student at the university. He highlighted their enthusiasm and strength and said he wanted to invest in a team that would give them a memorable shared experience while they are studying.

The founder is also involved with other amateur sides. FC U50 is made up of players over 40, while FC Tôi Yêu Tổ Quốc Tôi and FC Anh Trai Sân Phủi bring together other grassroots players and football content creators. The VSC-S6 squad, by contrast, is drawn from the student body.

Sơn also cited his close relationship with football academic Đức Anh Từ Sơn as a reason for starting the side. The seven-a-side competition gives its players an opportunity to test themselves on a wider amateur stage.

A wider health message

Sơn told SGGP that living with gout for a decade changed his perspective on health. He wants to use football to encourage physical activity, particularly among young people, through games on six-, seven- and 11-a-side pitches.

The newspaper said his competitions have included school and university teams who do not pay participation fees. An April 2026 event involved 512 youth teams from northern provinces. Another planned youth competition in November aims to bring together 700 teams, with a Hanoi finals date of 29 November; that figure is a target, not a confirmed entry count.
