Vietnamese investigators have charged and detained 94 suspects in a cross-border fraud case in Thanh Hoa, the Ministry of Public Security said on November 4. Government News reported spokesperson Major General Nguyen Quoc Toan's update, which added five suspects to the figure announced on October 25.

Investigation covers electronic fraud and unlawful stays

The charged group comprises 90 foreign nationals and four Vietnamese citizens. Authorities opened the case under Article 290 of the Criminal Code, concerning appropriation through computer networks, telecommunications or electronic means, and Article 348, concerning organising unlawful stays in Vietnam.

According to Toan, five suspects face both charges, while one faces a charge of organising gambling. The wider case involves 113 foreign nationals, including people from China, India, Cambodia, Malaysia and Myanmar.

Investigators are continuing to consolidate documents and evidence concerning people outside the group of 94 charged suspects. The November 4 announcement describes the current stage of the investigation.

Authorities emphasise cooperation and online vigilance

The ministry said technology-enabled fraud presents complex challenges in Vietnam and internationally. Its approach includes early detection, cooperation among agencies and collaboration with foreign counterparts.

Toan also said authorities protect foreigners' lawful rights while acting against those who use Vietnamese territory for unlawful activities.

The ministry urged people to remain alert on social networks and online platforms, particularly when participants' identities are unclear or investment and business offers promise unusually high interest or returns. Evidence gathering in the remaining parts of the case is continuing.
