Construction begins on two-unit LNG plant

EVN and Power Project Management Board 2 began construction of the Quảng Trạch II LNG power project on October 20. The plant is part of the Quảng Trạch power centre in Hòn La Economic Zone, Phú Trạch commune, Quảng Trị province.

The two-unit plant has a planned capacity of nearly 1,613 megawatts and investment of more than 40.1 trillion dong. The announced financing structure is 20% equity and 80% commercial borrowing. EVN said contractor selection had been completed for an EPC package involving a Chinese power-construction group and Vietnam's Lilama.

The first unit is scheduled for commercial generation in February 2030, with the second following two months later. These are project milestones ahead, not generating capacity already in commercial service.

Expected output and separate existing production

Once operational, the plant is expected to supply around 9.5 billion kilowatt-hours a year. That is projected annual output rather than electricity already delivered.

The wider Quảng Trạch centre comprises Quảng Trạch I, LNG Quảng Trạch II and LNG Quảng Trạch III, with around 4,500 MW planned in total. EVN's first two plants together account for nearly 3,015 MW and more than 82.145 trillion dong of investment.

Quảng Trạch I's two completed units have already supplied a reported 620 million kilowatt-hours to the national grid. That actual production belongs to the separate first project and should not be attributed to the newly started LNG plant. Provincial officials expressed expectations for jobs, infrastructure and supporting industry as construction proceeds.
